Guide for the Work at Home Parent
If you are a parent who works from home, you are undoubtedly grateful for the extra time you are able to spend with your family. As high technology progresses, more and more jobs are being created that allows one to work from the home - great news for parents.
Working from home, while wonderful, poses the issue of being able to balance your work life with your family life. Here are some tips of keeping that balance in check:
1.) Establish rules and normal working hours. Explain to your family what your home based business or job will entail in order for everything to run successfully. Doing this may lessen the chances of interruptions and distractions.
2.) Prioritize. Consider investing in a Blackberry, or something of the sort, that you can use as a planning tool. Here you can enter in appointments, school activities, project deadlines, etc. Update your planning tool on a daily basis so you can use it best to your advantage. Once you have your schedule in one place, it will be much easier to prioritize tasks, and most importantly, get them done.
3.) Keep the Commitment. Whether it’s a promise to your daughter to attend her recital, or to a new business client that you will be available for a lunch date at the end of the week - keep your word! This is something very important to both your family and your business. If situations arise that cause you to have to break your commitment, be open and honest about it, and if possible, be ready with an alternate plan.
4.) Stay Flexible. Learning to be flexible will spare you, your family, and your home based job or business a lot of stress. Know that things we cannot control happen in life - and often times, it appears to happen all at once. To work with this, research and try out different solutions and methods that work for you, your family, and your business. Life is unpredictable, but if you are ready to deal with that with flexibility and an open mind, certain circumstances will be far less daunting!
